Twitter is a good example of how users are setting the direction today. Twitter was setup for friends to tell each other where they are and what they are doing. This has morphed into so much more, led by users.
Google Wave will change and develop and in a years time may be something completely different, based on what users want and how they use it.

To expand and spilled into some of your comments made on It's over, isn't it?.
The problem today is that, this market is moving fast and yes innovating, evolving and providing new and exciting ways to communicate, the CMS/ECM companies have no choice but to evolve with them. Yes, some will perish but new ones will take there place.
If you look at the quality of web sites across the world today even by enterprise corporations there are still a lot of poor sites. These need CMS/ECM today and to think that these companies can jump from, where they are to a full working social environment is a big ask. Even if they could they would still need a solid basis to work from, this requires an effective site management system.

Cheryl also make some good points, we should not forget that at the end of the day people will buy what they need and want, don’t right off the customer.

Thanks Cheryl, always great to get your feedback. ...

Thanks Cheryl, always great to get your feedback.

I am not sure I agree on the game changing impact of open source in general.
